Description

Magnetar UDP800 : DVD/BLu Ray

Product Description

Magnetar UDP800 4K UHD blu ray player is a high end disc player, designed to get the best possible sound and picture from your discs. It uses a Media Tek Quad Core, MT8581 chipset and has the latest picture support, including Dolby Vision and HDR10+. Contrast is excellent and the picture is clear and sharp with rich colours. The metal casework is elegant and durable, while the components used are high end and designed for performance rather than cost. There is also a custom transformer and excellent connectivity.

Reference quality image

The UDP800 is a versatile unit that can play 4K UHD d, blu rays, DVDs and other discs. The unit also supports the most recent way of encoding video information, with the H265 codec. H265 needs less bandwidth and processing power, to give smoother motion. As a result a 15mps data rate can be used for 4K content. That is half that used for H264. Notably, encoding is more efficient.

What is H264 and H265?

H265 and 264 are compression and encoding methods used for video signals. The difference is in how the information is encoded with H265 being more efficient, with smaller bandwidth requirements.

HDR

HDR which stands for High Dynamic Range and refers to the contrast and colour depth of an image. The dynamic range is the difference between the lowest and highest brightness scenes, as well as the colour depth. With SDR it is limited to 100 nits of brightness and a contrast ratio of 1,200:1. The colour depth is 8 bits. This limits the brightness of the picture and the number of colours that can be reproduced. On the other hand, HDR displays have a brightness of 400 nits with a contrast ratio that is almost infinite. The colour depth is also higher at 10 bits.

Dolby Vision

Dolby Vision is an alternative to HDR10+ with a bit depth of 12 bits for reproducing a wide range of colours for a bright and colourful image. Unlike standard HDR, Dolby Vision also features dynamic metadata which adjusts the brightness and tone mapping per scene and offers excellent contrast between lighter and darker elements. Many 4K blu ray discs now offer Dolby Vision encoded content.

HDR10+

HDR10+ is the latest version of HDR technology and also features dynamic metadata like Dolby Vision. The UDP800 supports all of these technologies to get the best possible performance from your 4K UHD discs, no matter what they were encoded with.

Upscaling

The UDP800 can upscale lower resolution sources, up to full 4K resolution. That is 3840 x 2160 pixels, four times the resolution of HD 1080p. Even standard DVD’s will look stunning.

Not forgetting the sound

Modern movies are often encoded with multiple channels. 3D surround sound is also common with Dolby Atmos. As a result, the UDP800 can decode DSD64/128, multi-channel DSD64 and 192kHz/24-bit PCM formats. It can also decode ALAC, APE, FLAC and WAV files. DSD stands for Direct stream Digital and is a highly efficient codec, that is increasingly being used for movie soundtracks. PCM formats are used by CD’s and 24-bit PCM is used for HD audio. Finally this unit can play DTS-HD master audio and Dolby Atmos sound. Dolby Atmos has up to eleven channels. These include height and overhead channels.

User experience and connectivity

The UDP800 has the connectivity that only high end units generally offer. For example, there are two HDMI sockets as well as a LAN Ethernet port. There is also a USB port, and the audio output features balanced XLR connections, as well as RCA outputs. There are also coaxial and optical digital outputs for connecting to an external DAC. The menu system is comprehensive and the interface gives you easy access to settings, USB devices and network services.

Disc format support

The UDP800 has support for most disc formats including UHD-BD (Ultra High Definition Blu Ray Disc). BD, BD-R, BD-RE and many others. SACD is also supported along with up to 16TB of files from an external drive. You can also access NAS drives over the network via the ethernet port.
