Description

Magnetar UDP900 : DVD/BLu Ray

Magnetar UDP900 4K UHD blu ray player is a flagship top of the range disc player designed principally to deliver the very best possible sound and picture quality from your discs.

It is very well built and weighs in at 15Kg which is very heavy for a disc player, thanks to its solid construction and isolation of components. The modernist quartered front panel hides a massive dual power supply. There are two 60W toroidal transformers, one for the analogue audio section and another for the surround sound and hi-res section. Both supplies are shielded for noise reduction.

UDP900 is more than just a Blu player. It is also aimed at the audiophile and features a very high end DAC, in addition to further connectivity options over the UDP800, including separate 7.1 channel surround outputs. Video performance is top-notch and of course it supports HDR10+ and Dolby Vision.

Extreme build quality

The UDP900 features a 6-layer main PCB that has an ultra low noise TXCO Temperature Compensated Crystal oscillator that improves the precision and noise performance, of the LDO (low dropout Power supply. LDO supplies are non switching, so have no switching noise, to give the cleanest possible audio quality.

High end audio components are used from Myrata, TDK and Elna. The audio boards are four layers and each channel is independent. The power supply has improved magnetic core transformers, which are encased in epoxy, to reduce vibration and heat generation

Top end audio playback

Audio quality is a priority with the UDP900. Notably, the Sabre ES9038PRO DAC is used. These are normally seen in high-end AV receivers. This is a 7.1 surround sound capable chip that can output standard stereo or the full seven channels. The UDP900 has a set of RCA outputs for connecting to external surround amplifiers. There are also HDMI, as well as optical or coaxial outputs. Finally, this unit can also play SACDs.

Video features

UDP900 features HDR10, HDR10+ and Dolby Vision. These are all High Dynamic Range formats. This is a versatile unit that can play any type of disc and supports 4K UHD playback. It can also deal with the latest encoding methods, such as H265. H265 needs less bandwidth making the encoding more efficient. The result is smoother motion and a faster response.

Another useful feature is the video upscaling, the UDP 900 upscales lower resolution sources up to full 4K resolution. That is 3840 x 2160 pixels. Four times the resolution of HD 1080P. As a result, even standard DVDs will look amazing.

HDR

HDR is an acronym for High Dynamic Range, this refers to the picture quality, not the audio. Dynamic range is the difference between the darkest and lightest part of the image. The image is measured by the contrast ratio, the brightness and the colour bit depth. Standard Dynamic Range images have 100 nits of brightness, with a contrast ratio of 1,200:1 and a colour depth of 8 bits. As a result, the brightness of the picture and the number of colours that can be reproduced are limited.

Alternatively, HDR has 400 nits of brightness and a contrast ratio that is almost infinite. This became possible when LED backlights came into use. These can be driven to much higher brightness levels. HDR also has better colour depth at 12 bits.

Dolby Vision and HDR10+

UDP900 also supports Dolby Vision, which offers even higher performance with 12-bit colour depth for a wider range of bright and vivid colours. Dolby Vision also features dynamic metadata which adjusts tone mapping and brightness per scene which helps with contrast and detail between light and dark elements of the image. HDR10+ is the latest version of HDR which also features dynamic metadata. The UDP900 is designed to get the best possible performance from your discs no matter what they are encoded with.

Versatile connectivity

The UDP900 has excellent connectivity, what you would expect from a flagship player. On the video side there are two HDMI output connectors. These can be used to feed the signal to a TV and/or projector. Unusually, there is also an Ethernet port so that you can access NAS drives over a network. Audio is well catered for with Balanced XLR outputs as well as separate outputs for 7.1 channels (via RCA), a useful feature for those who have AV receivers or AV processors with such inputs and usually only included on high end players.
